Jeff Strang, Jeff Lewis, stephen Hunt and I (Jan) ran the Chemainus this weekend and started talking about the idea Jeff Strang had to do a river clean up on the Cowichan. Being a Canadian Heritage River, we think that it would be a great oportunity for us to doa clean up day or weekend there. During the summer there are lots of tubers and other recreational users and due to the volume of people and the lack of volume of water, a lot of garbage is left behind.
Unfortunately, we are pretty late already and Jakub pointed out that a lot of the garbage might already have been washed away. However, it might be still worth while to do a clean-up. Shayne offered to help us organize it as an event under the name and support of the VIWPS. We should come up with a good date where a lot of people can show up.
Any ideas? I started a discussion in the Forum.

The Cowichan would be good to clean up as it is the drinking water supply for Duncan and Crofton but there are other rivers that are filthier. The Koksilah has lots of plastic and garbage on the lower portion that would be good to get out. Also the Nanaimo River could always use a good clean as well.

I think we might be too late on the Cowichan, as my guess is that it’s flooding today.

I just got this from Tim Marks:
Hi Jan,
VCKC has done a large Cow River clean up the secound weekend in Oct. A couple pickup loads were taken to the dump.
Cheers
Tim
Thats great! I wasn’t sure if the VCKC had already done it. So that leaves us with the planning for next year to get more paddlers and only the one club to help. I think the VIWPS would be a great way to involve more people.
Also, we might wanna look into other rivers. As JeffL mentioned, the Kok is really dirty.
Any ideas?
